Arizona State Board of Accountancy
About Us

Certified Public Accountants have a unique role in the business community. Because they are professionally competent, highly trained and maintain a quality continuing education standard, more is expected of them than for most other professions. The Arizona State Board of Accountancy licenses CPAs and assures that they are performing their services at the highest professional, ethical and responsive level both at the time of initial licensing and during their active CPA careers.

There are many tax, bookkeeping and accounting services, but many of these are not licensed nor do they meet the standards required by the State Board of Accountancy. CPAs are fully qualified to provide a complete range of accounting services including business management and consulting, computerized accounting services and complex financial advice and reporting on the stability and capabilities of corporations, international companies, small businesses, non-profit organizations, schools, governments and any other entities that seek validation of their operations and assets.

The Arizona State Board of Accountancy registers and regulates the CPAs doing business in this state. The Board is comprised of seven members who are fully knowledgeable about the accounting field. There are five CPAs and two public members with extensive practical exposure to the accounting field.

The Board appoints committees whose members are knowledgeable and dedicated public servants, professional CPAs, attorneys and educators. These committees provide screening and evaluation of applicants for the CPA examination and certification as CPAs. They assure adherence to standards of continuing education and the quality of professional education hours and provide for regulation and, if necessary, discipline of the industry. These committees advise and recommend to the Board about standards of conduct, integrity, independence, competence, disposition of records and complaints and their investigation.

The Arizona State Board of Accountancy provides input into the legislative process, proposes and implements, where needed and authorized, changes in local and national accountancy regulations. It promotes improvements in procedures and standards and is involved in referendums and industry changes as a source of information, advice and community leadership.

The Board maintains an office at 100 N. 15th Avenue, Phoenix,  but serves more than 11,000 individual CPAs and 2,200 firms throughout Arizona and in other states and foreign countries. Throughout the year, the Board oversees that CPA examination at various Prometric Exam sites for approximately 400 to 600 candidates. The Board and its committees are represented by CPAs and others that come from many areas of the state.

It conducts between 100 and 200 investigations each year resulting from clients, other government information, third parties and through self-reporting of violations.

The primary responsibility of the Arizona State Board of Accountancy is to protect the public's economic welfare by establishing and enforcing standards of qualification and accounting practice of person certified as Certified Public Accountants or Public Accountants and accounting firms registered by the Board.
